Mr. P’s Deli – Birmingham, AL

One of my great friends told me about a deli that was a must try. Heading up the mountain to Bluff Park between Birmingham and Hoover, Alabama is where I came across the little place called Mr. P’s Deli. It is a deli, butcher shop, and market all in one.

You can get an array of sandwiches to either eat there or take home.

Want to cook some fresh steaks or pork chops at home? Mr. P’s has you covered.

Need a bottle of wine to go with that steak? They have a nice selection of wine to choose from.

I stopped in at lunchtime and was exited to try one of their sandwiches. It was a tough choice but I finally picked the Big Italian Sub. It is a 1/3 pound sandwich packed with ham, salami, and provolone cheese on a white hoagie roll. It was the perfect size for lunch.

The sub came out toasty warm. The cheese was perfectly melted between the meats. The hoagie roll was fresh and soft, it made taking a bite so easy. They drizzled a balsamic vinegar dressing on one side of the hoagie roll. It added a sweet and tangy taste to the salty meats. Plus, the sub came with a crunchy dill pickle.

This was a great find and I am so glad my friend told me about it. I look forward to going back for another sandwich. Check out all their options at http://www.mrpdeli.com/

Gianmarco’s – Birmingham, AL

I have written about several awesome restaurants throughout Birmingham. Just when I thought I had visited all the hot spots, I was told about an Italian restaurant that was a must try. Gianmarco’s is a small restaurant located in the Homewood area. The parking lot is tiny so be prepared to possibly have to park on the street.

As soon as I walked in I could smell pizza and garlic. It made me even hungrier than I already was. The entrance takes you through their car area. It’s a small space but if you are looking for a quick bite to eat or an after work cocktail, this would be perfect.

I had a table in the main dining room. As I walked through my eyes glanced into the kitchen. That is where I saw the wood fire oven. After seeing that hot over, I am certain that their pizza is amazing.

I started off with the Pasta Fagioli soup. It was the perfect size portion to start the meal off. The soup had great flavor. The broth was very creamy. The parmesan cheese that was melted on top added a little saltiness to the broth. There was a generous amount of vegetables in the soup. I loved all the cannellini beans that were in it.

I was in the mood for pasta for my main dish. Every option on Gianmarco’s menu sounded delicious. I knew no matter what I chose it would be amazing. So after a quick game of eenie-meenie-miney-mo in my head I decided to order the Rigatoni Quattro Formaggio.

The first bite of the rigatoni made my heart just melt. It was so rich and creamy. The sauce had a combination of four cheese mixed with some heavy cream. It was an adult version of macaroni and cheese. The pancetta that was on top added texture to the sauce. The richness of this dish filled me up quickly.

Unfortunately, I got too full from my pasta and soup so I was not able to try any desserts. I am certain that I will be returning, not just for dessert but to try on of their other dishes.

I would recommend Gianmarco’s to anyone. You can check them out on their Facebook page at facebook.com/Gianmarcos

I would recommend that you make a reservation since the restaurant is small. To see their menu visit http://www.birminghamrestaurants.com/

Rock n Roll Sushi – Hoover, AL

It had been a while since I had sushi and I was hungry for it. A friend of mine at work recommended I try her favorite sushi restaurant, Rock n Roll Sushi.

Just by the name I could tell that the theme of the restaurant would be music. Sure enough, when I walked in I saw guitars and posters decorating the walls.

I sat at the bar so I could watch them make all the different rolls. They have a large menu of creative rolls named after different bands and artists, like the KISS Roll or the Elvis Roll.

I started off with their ginger salad. It’s the typical style salad that I get at other Japanese restaurants. The difference here is they make their own ginger dressing. It was a creamy dressing that was similar to a yum-yum sauce.

I also shared some mini eggrolls. These had chicken in them and were served with a great sweet chili sauce. They were the perfect size appetizer.

The roll I went with was the RNR roll. It’s eel and avocado topped with eel sauce. I love eel sauce. It is sweet and tastes good on so many things. The eel was fresh and tender. I liked he creamy texture of the avocado paired with the eel.

Since that one roll was not filling enough I ordered their tuna twister. It is spicy tuna wrapped with sliced avocado and drizzled with their sweet chili sauce. They were also topped with crunchy flakes. The presentation was beautiful.

The avocado was sliced so thin that it just melted in my mouth. The tuna naturally was the star of the dish. It was so fresh I would have thought it was just pulled from the ocean. They chopped it up into small bite size pieces. It too just melted in my mouth. The sweet chili sauce was fantastic on the tuna. It enhanced the flavor of the tuna.

I loved everything that I ordered and I cannot wait to go back for more. I highly recommend Rock n Roll Sushi. Visit their website at: www.rnrsushi.com

Galley and Garden – Birmingham, AL

I found another wonderful place to have Sunday brunch. Galley and Garden is a quaint old house that has been converted into a restaurant. It is located in the 5 Points District of Birmingham. There is no parking lot so you will need to valet park but it is convenient.

The old house was very cute. When you walk through the front door you enter the foyer where the hostess will greet you. I was seated in one of the room to the left of the entryway. I pictured this room as the old dining room of the house. The space was open and not packed with tables. There was a beautiful bar set up along the center wall to make all the excellent brunch cocktails.

My table was the closest to the kitchen. In the remodel of the house, they added big glass windows so you can watch the chefs do their magic.

Brunch could not start properly without a mimosa. The orange juice that was used was fresh and sweet. It paired well with the brut champagne they used.

Their brunch menu had several traditional items plus as assortment of specialty dishes. What caught my eye was the Braised Hereford Short Rib Benedict. The chef took something that felt familiar and added his unique flair to the dish. I just had to try it.

This dish came with two poached eggs on top of short ribs and a fresh made buttermilk biscuit. The hollandaise sauce was drizzled on top over the eggs. Also decorating the plate was an andouille potato hash.

To start breaking down each component, the biscuit was fantastic. It was fluffy and light. I enjoyed when the yolk from the egg and the hollandaise sauce covered the biscuit. It made the taste become creamy and rich. The egg itself was cooked perfectly. The whites were completely cooked which I prefer. Having this served over a biscuit verses an English muffin is my new favorite way to eat this. I wish more restaurants would serve it this way. The soft texture of each bite is better than the hard texture of the English muffin.

The short rib was amazing! The meat was perfect just by itself. It had a juicy, salty flavor with a few crispy edges. When combined with the eggs, biscuit, and sauce the taste became hearty. The meat was not overwhelmed with the flavor of the egg yolk or sauce. Each component worked together. The saltiness of the short rib was softened by the yolk and sauce and the biscuit brought in a sweet taste.

I have not forgotten about the potatoes that came on the side. I really liked how the skin of the potato was crispy. They were slightly peppery with the seasoning that the chef used. I added a little extra flavor by dipping the potato in the left over hollandaise sauce that I had. This was not a traditional hash; it was more just roasted potatoes with a ton of flavor.

For a fun time at brunch with great service and delicious food, then Galley and Garden will be perfect. For warmer days, they have great outdoor seating. Check out their menu at http://www.galleyandgarden.com/.   Some of the items will change based on what the chef is felling. However, the Braised Hereford Short Rib Benedict is a staple of the menu.

Luna’s BBQ – Hanceville, AL

Forty-Five minutes north of Birmingham, Alabama is the small town of Hanceville. I had passed through when I went to visit The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament founded by Mother Mary Angelica. After spending a few hours at the shrine, I had worked up an appetite.

As I was heading back toward the highway, I noticed a sign for Luna’s BBQ and thought that would be a perfect place to stop. Considering the parking lot was full of cars, I figured this was a good choice.

img_6384    img_6385

The staff was extremely welcoming as soon as I walked through the door. The smell of BBQ filled the restaurant.

img_6388

They had a pretty big menu, that had lots of non-BBQ dishes to choose from.

img_6386

I went for the smoked turkey plate. It automatically came with baked beans and I got to choose two more sides. I went for the baked potato and the coleslaw.

img_6389

I really enjoyed their turkey. Other restaurants usually serve their turkey in slices. Luna’s pulls apart their turkey (like you would see with pulled pork) and they chop it up. Not only did it make the turkey easier to eat, but it allowed the white Alabama BBQ sauce to coat the meat. It was delicious. The sauce was wonderful and toward the end I actually added some of their traditional BBQ sauce to the meat as well. It was a flavor explosion. The two sauces together were a perfect combination.

The baked beans were sweet. I liked how they added green peppers and onions to it. This added extra flavor to the beans. Their coleslaw was prepared my favorite way – finely chopped and sweet. It is the perfect accompaniment to BBQ. And you can never go wrong with a big baked potato loaded with butter.

I had worked up an appetite and Luna’s definitely helped satisfy my hunger. If you are in the area or just driving through, make sure you stop by Luna’s for some awesome BBQ and friendly service. Visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/LunasBBQ/

Avo – Mountain Brook, AL

Avo is located upstairs from Dram Whiskey Bar that I have mentioned on Twitter before. I remember that my bartender at Dram said that Avo had a great Sunday brunch so I knew I had to try them out.

 img_3967

Brunch would not be complete without a mimosa. Avo had an Italian mimosa on the menu that I had to try. This mimosa was sparkling wine with grapefruit juice, and an Aperol floater. It was not as sweet as a regular mimosa, the grapefruit juice made it tart, but it was good and a great way to start off brunch.

img_3952

I ordered the Bluegrass Breakfast, which is a class is breakfast plate of eggs, a meat, grits, and a homemade biscuit. For my meat I went with the bacon. They were nice thick slices of bacon that had a great smoky taste.

img_3958

The grits were perfect as they were already loaded with butter, just how grits should be. Their biscuits were petite in size. I love the size because I did no fill up on it and was able to eat everything on my plate.

img_3953

The table also shared the jalapeño hash browns. The potatoes were diced with chopped onions and jalapeño. It was not too spicy and it went well with the extra egg that came on top.

I recommend you add Avo to your brunch check list if you are in the Birmingham area. Check out their menu and drink options at www.avorestaurant.com

Original Oyster House – Gulf Shores, AL

There are so many great places to get seafood and oysters in Gulf Shores. Another restaurant I wanted to try has been around for over 30 years – Original Oyster House.

IMG_1928 IMG_1963

I was excited to see a giant Gator greeting customers at the door!

IMG_1945

Naturally they had several options of oysters on their menu. I ordered their parmesan garlic oysters. They bake their oysters, they are not grilled like other restaurants I have been to. They are covered in garlic, butter, parsley, and cheese.

These oysters were good but they did not have the same smoky flavor that grilled oysters have. These reminded me more of Oyster Rockefeller. An order of their parmesan oysters come out in 8’s not a full dozen. They are a lot larger in size than other oysters so they are much more filling.

IMG_1917

Along with my oysters I enjoyed their drink of the day – a Blue Hawaiian. It was truly a vacation drink. Completely appropriate to have at the shore.

IMG_1912

I went to the Original Oyster House for the oysters but they have a very large menu of other fresh seafood. I was watching what other customers were ordering and so many of the fish dishes looked good. I will definitely need to come back to try something else.

Wintzell’s Oyster House – Orange Beach, AL

Just across the street from the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico sits Wintzell’s Oyster House. They have been serving oysters to beachgoers for over 75 years. They started in Mobile in 1938 by Mr. J. Oliver Wintzell. He was apparently known for his witty sayings and you can still see his influence in the décor around the restaurant. One of those witty sayings is right there on the menu: “Fried, Stewed, or Nude”.

IMG_1842

I was there for the Chargrilled oysters. I knew they would be fresh and I was so excited.

IMG_1819

They came out sizzling, covered in butter and cheese. I squeezed a little lemon juice on top and then I got working. These oysters are best to eat when they are hot because I find they get a little chewy if they get too cold. Their flavor was fantastic. The taste of the garlic and butter was wonderful next to the brininess of the oyster and the melted cheese on top was superb.

IMG_1826

They were so addicting that I ended up ordering a second dozen. That’s right – I ate 2 dozen oysters! I was so full afterwards but it was totally worth it.

IMG_1834

While eating all those oysters, I enjoyed one of their signature mixed drinks. I went for the Dragon Drink. It was the perfect summer cocktail full of light and dark rums mixed with fruit juices.

IMG_1823

There are several options to choose from in Orange Beach when it comes to fresh seafood, but you need to make Wintzell’s your first stop. They have been around over 75 years for a reason.

They have several locations now around Alabama so check them out at: www.wintzellsoysterhouse.com

Wasabi Juan’s – Birmingham, AL

When I was told that Wasabi Juan’s makes sushi burritos I was intrigued by the concept. A combination of sushi and Mexican food is something that I have never seen in all of my travels.

IMG_2723 IMG_2737

Their menu is written on a big chalkboard wall. I read over all the options of tacos and burritos. Everything sounded good so I had a hard time deciding what to try. To make the decision easier I went for two items that were noted as being fan favorites.

IMG_2722   IMG_2724

I started with their 4:20 nachos. These were not any ordinary nachos. These were made with Doritos topped with spicy tuna (raw just like in sushi) and avocado then smothered in spicy mayo and unagi sauce. These were very addicting nachos. I would have never thought Doritos covered in sushi ingredients would taste so good. They were a little messy to eat but worth it. The cheesy Doritos flavor mixed well with the spicy tuna and avocado. The mayo and unagi sauce added a creamy element that balanced out the nachos.

IMG_2728

I ordered the Rainbow Burrito to accompany the nachos. This burrito came with spicy tune, salmon, crab, avocado, and cucumber. All of these ingredients were wrapped up in a rice wrapper. It really was a giant sushi roll. The tuna and salmon were fresh. I loved the crunch that the cucumber gave each bite. I added a little wasabi to the soy sauce that was included and drizzled it over the burrito. I wanted a little extra kick.

IMG_2731

This was a fun new way to eat sushi. I would recommend everyone visiting Birmingham to check out Wasabi Juan’s. They are located in the Avondale area.

Village Tavern – Birmingham, AL

If you have been following my blog then you have noticed that I love Sunday brunch. I was looking for new place to try and Village Tavern popped up on my list. When I researched them I noticed they have several locations around the country. Just taking a quick glance at their menu U saw a couple of things I wanted to try, so I made a reservation.

IMG_9804 IMG_9809

The inside of Village Tavern was beautiful. It reminded me of a fancy ski lodge, high ceilings with wood beams and huge rustic chandeliers. The kitchen was open to the seating area so I could watch all the action.

To start off brunch, I ordered the baked brie for the table. It sounded like it would be great to share. It came with French bread, almonds, sliced apples, and dried fruits. It was a beautiful presentation on the plate when it came out. The brie was still bubbling so I had to wait a few minutes before I could dig in. The brie was extremely creamy with a salty finish. It was fun mixing the cheese with the different fruit options. My favorite pairing was the brie with the dried apricots; the saltiness of the cheese complemented the sweetness of the apricot.

IMG_9796   IMG_9797

I wanted to try something unique for my main dish. I went for the Crab Cake Benedict – which was exactly like a traditional eggs benedict but with a crab cake added. I am usually not a big eggs benedict fan because I feel it is kind of bland; however, I really liked this combination. Adding the crab cake created a new dimension to this classic dish. I really liked the texture that the crab gave the egg and it tasted great with the hollandaise sauce. The crab cake by itself was good too and I noticed that they have this as a separate menu item so I would recommend this.

IMG_9803

I also got to try their homemade Belgian Waffle. I did not get anything fancy on it, just butter and whip cream. The waffle had a nice crispy edge and the inside was soft, just the wat I like it. I could tell they used a buttermilk batter. I find that the flavor of the buttermilk pairs well with pure maple syrup.

IMG_9799

If you are hungry for brunch I would recommend Village Tavern. Visit their website to see if they have a location near you.
