Oscar’s at the Museum – Birmingham, AL

I learned about a special brunch at the Birmingham Museum of Art that only happens the first Sunday of every month. It’s a really popular experience and it took me two months to be able to get a reservation. When I was finally able to get in I was extremely excited.

IMG_3292

Walking into the museum I was greeted with the sound of live music. The piano echoed throughout. It really added to the ambiance and enhanced the brunch experience.

This brunch was buffet style with a carving station, a made-to-order omelet station, fresh fruits and breads, an assortment of hot dishes, and a full collection of fresh desserts. It all looked delicious that it was hard to determine exactly where to start.

IMG_3280   IMG_3279

After walking all the options I decided to start with waffles. On one half I poured on the warm maple syrup, keeping it very traditional. The other half I covered with the fresh chopped strawberries and Chantilly Cream.

IMG_3282

They had shrimp and grits that I noticed was extremely popular. I saw them refill that section twice. I knew I had to try this dish. The shrimp had wonderful flavor and the grits were cheesy. The grits were really addicting. I ended up going back for seconds on the grits.

Their carving station had amazingly tender and juicy roast beef. They also had shredded lamb. I am not a fan of lamb and I usually just avoid it. However, I was told that I needed to try the way they prepare it. It was remarkably similar to a pulled pork. It did not have that normal gamey taste. It was more of a smoky flavor that I enjoyed.

IMG_3285

They had several options of cakes, pies, and cheesecakes to choose from for dessert. It went for the caramel cheesecake. It was so creamy and not too sweet. It was a great ending to brunch.

IMG_3288

If you are looking for a unique brunch experience in Birmingham, then make plans for Oscar’s. Look far enough in advance because they fill up quickly. Their menu will also change each month so to see what they will be serving go to www.artsbma.org

Vizzini Farms Winery – Calera, AL

Just a few miles south of Birmingham is a family run winery called Vizzini Farms. In addition to being able to do a wine tasting, they have an Italian bistro at the winery.

IMG_0390

Their wine selection has everything from dry reds to fruity dessert wines. During my visit, I got a bottle of their Paulina wine that had just been bottled that week. This wine was a Merlot with black raspberries that made it semi-sweet.

IMG_0370

This wine paired nicely with the Italian sausage flat bread pizza I ordered. The sausage was homemade and they cut it in large slices for the pizza. They used fresh cherry tomatoes, peppers and onions on top that added a sweet element to the pizza. It was the best snack to have with wine.

IMG_0380      IMG_0381

While I was at the winery I got to meet Tom Vizzini, the founder. He was the nicest man and told me all about the wineries history, as well as the history of his family. We talked about all the different wines that they make and the list is huge. After tasting several other varieties, I ended up buying a few extra bottles to take home.

  • Apple Riesling – a sweet white wine with a hint of apple
  • Tuxedo Junction – a chocolate raspberry Merlot that is perfect for dessert
  • Paulina – since I enjoyed it so much with my pizza I bought an extra bottle

Finally before I left, Mr. Vizzini took me outside to see his peach tree. He showed me how he makes his Peach Chardonnay with an actual peach in the bottle. It was really cool!

If you enjoy wine and are traveling through Alabama, make sure you stop by Vizzini Farms Winery. Your taste buds will thank you. Visit their website for directions at www.vizzinifarmswinery.com

Jackson’s – Homewood, AL

There is an area of Birmingham called SoHo and this is where I found Jackson’s. I got there in between the lunch and dinner crowds, so it was easy to get a seat.

IMG_0432

I was not that hungry for a full meal but I did have munchies. They had a spinach dip on the menu that they called Verde Dip. It was loaded with garlic and the spinach was chopped up very fine, which made it much easier to eat. My server did mention that this dip was one of the more popular items on the menu.

IMG_0428

They had a seasonal side dish on the menu that currently was brussel sprouts. These also were recommended because of how they are prepared. They are roasted in the wood fire oven in a cast iron skillet. They are chopped up in smaller pieces as compared to just cut in half. This preparation allowed for more crispy edges.

IMG_0426

To top off these great appetizers, I ordered the Sangria, made with fresh juices. It was the perfect thirst quencher for a hot summer afternoon.

IMG_0427

The wait staff was very welcoming at Jackson’s and they told me all about their Sunday brunch menu. I will definitely be adding them to my list to head back to. If you’re in the mood for great drinks and good food, check out Jackson’s. Make sure you ask them about their pigeon mascot Ralph!

Savage’s Bakery – Homewood, AL

This cute, old fashioned family bakery is in the downtown area of Homewood. They were founded in 1939 but they have made Homewood their home since the 1950s.

IMG_0408

As soon as you walk in through the door you are greeted with the smell of sweetness in the air. You know right away each item is made from scratch right there in the back. It was all the desserts that caught my attention. They had everything from cookies, cakes, pies, and pastries.

IMG_0399  IMG_0398

  IMG_0397

I saw petit fours in the case so I was naturally inclined to order those but right when I was about to order I saw their chocolate éclairs. They was calling to me and I knew I had to have one. The pastry dough was light and airy. There was so much cream in the middle that as I took a bite it squeezed out the sides in all directions. I have never had an éclair with that generous amount of filling. The chocolate on top was soft and creamy. I could tell it was fresh because of just how soft it was.

IMG_0405

Since I only stopped in to satisfy my sweet tooth, I did not get to sample any of their fresh breads and biscuits. The biscuit sandwiches looked great and a different take on a ham and cheese or roast beef sandwich. Their fresh breads must also make the best grilled cheese sandwiches or even a peanut butter and jelly. I am making sure that I come back for lunch and pick up another dessert.

Check out what they excel at on their website www.savagesbakery.com. Don’t plan on going on Sunday’s because they are closed.

Grille 29 – Birmingham, AL

I have really started enjoying brunch on Sunday afternoons. This time I wanted to try Grille 29.

IMG_8340

One of the reasons this place made the list was their $3 mimosas. You can’t have brunch without a mimosa. If you are interested in something a little more salty and spicy they do offer a gourmet Bloody Mary. There was so much going on with this drink (including the Cajun shrimp) there was no need for a second one.

IMG_8327

They had fresh made deviled eggs that were perfect for sharing. They had a dill taste along with hints of truffle oil. They were topped with a crispy piece of prosciutto. That little crunch added a nice touch.

IMG_8333

They had many different options to choose from on the brunch menu. I had to try the Grand Marnier French toast. The bread was cooked perfectly – two large pieces of Texas toast that were crispy around the edges and soft in the center. The Grand Marnier anglaise came on the side so I could dip each piece of toast as I took a bite. I knew this dish was going to be sweet so I made sure my side item was the red roasted potatoes. This added a necessary flavor balance to my meal.

Edgar’s Bakery – Birmingham, AL

Located a few doors down from Bellini’s Ristorante is Edgar’s Bakery, a perfect stop to get dessert. I decided to get something to go, but they have several tables set up so you could enjoy a fresh dessert there.

IMG_1075

There are so many choices – cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, petit fours, danishes, bear claws – whatever your heart desires. They even have full cakes that you can take with you for a special occasion.

IMG_1069 IMG_1068

I went for an assortment of petit fours. These are my favorite dessert. They are small bites that allow you to try several unique flavors. In my box I got chocolate, vanilla, caramel, strawberry, and red velvet.

IMG_1070

Once I got in the car I ended up trying a red velvet. Two bites and I was done, the perfect dessert. It’s the right amount of sweetness without feeling like you have overindulged. These are also the perfect treat because they stay fresh for a couple of days.

So if you have a sweet tooth or something to celebrate make sure you go to Edgar’s Bakery. They have several locations around town so there is bound to be one near you. www.edgarsbakery.com

Bellini’s Ristorante – Birmingham, AL

I am always looking for new Italian restaurants. I was told that I had to try Bellini’s Ristorante for their take on Italian food.

IMG_1061

When I went in I felt like I was transformed to a family home with a large wine collection. Built into the walls were wonderful wine racks that I wish I had at home.

IMG_1050  IMG_1048

The wait staff was extremely friendly and very attentive. I had to start off with a traditional Bellini since it is the namesake of the restaurant. They used fresh peach puree that was noticeable as soon as I took a sip.

IMG_1042

I started off with their homemade soup of the day – Italian wedding soup. The broth was tastey with one large homemade meatball rather than smaller ones. It paired well with the homemade bread they served.

IMG_1047

The appetizer that was a must try was the meatball arancini. I have tried many different versions of arancinis, however, this was like nothing I have ever had before.

IMG_1044

This arancini is a meatball covered in a pesto risotto, then coated with panko breadcrumbs and fried. It was delicious. The meat was moist and light and the risotto was cooked perfectly.

IMG_1045

For my main course I got the Ricotta Gnocchi.

IMG_1052

I was expecting traditional gnocchi but this was completely different. They made a homemade gnocchi but then stuffed it with ricotta cheese. It was a like a gnocchi ravioli for a simpler description. It was severed with a sausage Bolognese sauce that was also delicious. It was like an Italian chili and I could have eaten an entire bowl.

Post Office Pies – Birmingham, AL

The Avondale area of Birmingham is a growing hot spot with breweries, clubs and great restaurants. Post Office Pies is one of these hot spots.

IMG_8014

Not only do they make fresh, homemade pizza in their wood fire oven, they make homemade sausage, meatballs, and mozzarella cheese!

IMG_8004

I started with the meatballs while waiting for the pizza to come out. The meat was extremely tender and moist. I could taste all the fresh seasonings and cheese in each bite.

IMG_8008

There are so many pizzas to choose from on the menu. I went for the “Swine Pie”, which was covered in their homemade pork sausage, pepperoni, bacon, and then topped with mozzarella and fresh basil. I could tell that all the ingredients were fresh simply by the taste. The pork sausage should be an item by itself on the menu – that’s how good it is.  The pizza dough is sweet and cooked perfectly with that added crunch from the oven.

IMG_8011

The pizza was much bigger than I expected which worked out well because I knew I had lunch for the next day. It’s a fun place to go and they are open late which is always a good things for a Saturday night.

Taco Mama – Homewood, AL

I was hanging out with my sister and we wanted to get a quick bite to eat. We decided to try a newer place called Taco Mama. This place had a cool vibe as soon as we walked up. The music they were playing made me feel like I was on vacation. Instead of traditional windows, they had garage doors, which were open because the weather was nice.

IMG_0848

You walk up to the counter to order but they bring your food to you at the table. Since we felt like we were on vacation we knew that fun cocktails were needed. I went for the Sangria and my sister tried the Pomegranate Margarita. Both were excellent choices!

IMG_0842

After looking over all the choices on the menu we settled on sharing nachos. We got to build our own starting with our choice of meat. There were over 8 choices which made it a challenge but we agreed upon chicken. If we thought choosing a meat was hard, it was now time for the toppings.

IMG_0845

They have a ton and it was really difficult not to get every single things on the list especially when you have items like queso and cilantro-lime rice. So we did our best and put together what we thought would taste best. We were not disappointed. Every aspect of the nachos was perfect, right down to the chips that were nice and light. It was the best dish to get and share between two people.

IMG_0843

We had a really fun time at Taco Mama. The staff was friendly and the food was great so we will be back for sure. I would recommend this place to anyone. Check them out at http://www.tacomamaonline.com/

Saw’s BBQ – Homewood, AL

So a few weeks ago I wrote about Saw’s Juke Joint. I enjoyed a great pulled pork sandwich but did not get to try their famous stuffed potato because they had sold out.  So for lunch, I decided to try their sister restaurant, Saw’s BBQ, located in Homewood, Alabama (in the Edgewood area).

IMG_0658

I could smell the BBQ as I walked up to the door. This location is smaller than the other but there is plenty of seating outside if you cannot find a place inside. They are extremely busy during lunch; the line was out the door but the staff was really efficient so the line moved fast.

IMG_0654

They have eight different stuffed potatoes to choose from. When it was my turn to order I went for the pork tater – which has green onions, bacon, and pulled pork layered on top of a giant baked potato and smothered with cheese and BBQ sauce.  The potato was huge. It was a good thing that I did not order any sides.

Their BBQ sauce has a sweet and tangy flavor that pairs so well with the pork. Their pork is so tender and moist and had nice chunks of bark mixed in. The potato is cooked perfectly too, no hard uncooked sections that you can sometimes find with large potatoes. Putting these to ingredients together makes for an amazing meal.

IMG_0652

I was thrilled to finally get to try Saw’s potato. It was worth the wait. Now I understand why everyone recommends them. Check them out at www.sawsbbq.com
