Columbia Restaurant – Clearwater Beach, FL

One of my favorite restaurants in Clearwater, Florida is Columbia Restaurant. They have multiple locations now but I have been visiting their Clearwater location for years. This Spanish-Cuban restaurant has been serving customers for over 100 years, and it is still family owned which is wonderful! They are rooted in family tradition and you can see that in the consistency of their famous dishes and drinks.

img_3703   img_3735

One of the reasons I love their Clearwater location is I can sit outside on their deck that overlooks the bay. Watching the boats go by reminds me why Florida is a perfect vacation spot.

img_3706

On a hot summer afternoon, a pitcher of Columbia’s famous sangria is a must. They have red or white, I went for the white. What adds to the enjoyment of this sangria is they make it for you right at your table.

img_3708      img_3711

I love getting to watch every ingredient that goes into it, plus the care that the server puts into making it just right.

img_3709     img_3714

They use a Sauvignon Blanco that is made just for the restaurant. They mix in fresh citrus juices and a touch of brandy. This is the BEST sangria I have ever had. I measure all others I try based on this one.

img_3723

For an appetizer I got the Ybor City Devil Crab Croquette. It’s made with fresh blue crab, paprika, and garlic. It’s rolled and covered in Cuban breadcrumbs then deep fried. There was a little spice to it but it balanced out with a sip of sangria.

img_3732     img_3734

The show stopper that is a must have for anyone visiting Columbia Restaurant is the “1905 Salad”. This salad is tossed right at your table. The chopped lettuce is mixed with julienne ham, Swiss cheese, turkey (if you want to add that), tomato, olives, grated Romano cheese and their homemade garlic dressing. It’s the dressing that makes this salad irresistible.

img_3720    img_3718

img_3716

You can get a smaller version of the salad, but I recommend the full size that they table can share. This is one of the only salads that I have ever been able to eat as my meal. It’s refreshing on a summer afternoon overlooking the water.

img_3727

Whether you are there on vacation or just having a quick lunch, being at Columbia helps you forget your troubles. Check out their website at www.columbiarestaurant.com  to find a location near you. You can always stop by their Tampa airport location before you get on your plane back home.

Anthony’s Homeport – Everett, WA

While in Everett, Washington, it was a must for me to enjoy a fresh seafood dinner. It was recommended that I check out Anthony’s Homeport that was in walking distance of my hotel. Anthony’s is located at the end of the pier at Everett Marina, not far from the Puget Sound Naval Complex. There are wonderful views of the water from both inside and outside of the restaurant.

img_3795      img_3810

It is peach season in Washington and Anthony’s wants to make sure everyone knows. They hung banners up to grab your attention and had fancy peach dessert and drink menus at each table.

img_3798     img_3809

I could not pass up something local so I started off with their Peach Cosmo. I loved that there was a fresh slice of peach floating in the drink. The flavor of the Cosmo was fantastic. The fresh peach puree that was used in the drink made all the difference; it kept the taste smooth with a touch of sweetness.

img_3800

The table shared the fan favorite baked Dungeness crab, shrimp, and artichoke dip. I can understand why this dip is so popular, it is extremely creamy and loaded with crab meat and tiny bay shrimp. I could have easily filled up on this rich dish if I wasn’t sharing it.

img_3803

Anthony’s had a Sunset dinner menu that I was excited to try. It came with an appetizer, chowder, an entrée plus a dessert. To start with I went for the Bay shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were kind of local, just down the road in Oregon. They were bite sized and chilled perfectly with a fresh cocktail sauce on top. Eating the shrimp with the chopped lettuce added a great crunch to each bite.

img_3802

As soon as I finished my last bite of shrimp the cup of clam chowder came out. The broth was creamy, just like you would expect and it was loaded with fresh clams. That is really the key to perfect clam chowder – fresh clams, not frozen or canned.

img_3804

They had many awesome options of seafood main courses. It was a hard choice but I settled on the ‘Northwest Duet” which was Alder planked wild Alaska Silver Salmon, topped with Oregon bay shrimp, and citrus butter. Plus it came with fresh green beans and a rice pilaf. It sounded like a lot of food but is was the prefect size portion. The citrus butter was not heavy and the zing of citrus complemented the shrimp and salmon. The salmon was cooked perfectly keeping it light and flakey.

img_3805

For dessert I went for their Burnt Cream – which is their version of Crème Brulee. The sugar on top was caramelized exquisitely. The cream itself as smooth and had a fantastic vanilla flavor. The sweetness was the perfect way to send the meal.

img_3806

If you are near the naval complex or the Everett Marina, stop by Anthony’s Homeport. Go for dinner or have a drink while you watch the sunset over the water.  www.anthonys.com

Tokyo, Japan

Throughout Tokyo I found that there are so many wonderful places to eat. I have already written about a few great experiences that were more sit down, fine dining style restaurants. What was just as delicious were the small local places that I found just walking around.

Xvin – Shiodome

There was a wonderful Chinese restaurant that was near my hotel. I love Chinese dim sum for breakfast and Xvin offered that. Plus the view out of their window was amazing.

Sumidagawa Bar – Asakusa

This was a neighborhood bar that I walked by after visiting the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. It was a small place where all the tables were outside. They welcomed me with an appetizer of soy sauce quail eggs. I got to taste Japanese plum wine for the first time. I also got chicken “meatballs” on a stick.

 DSC06598      IMG_9990

Tiger Gyoza Hall – Asakusa

Also located in Asakusa was a dumpling restaurant. They served several different varieties. What I learned was gyoza are Chinese not Japanese. They were pan fried and the filling was fantastic. They were very similar to dumplings that I have enjoyed in the states.

 DSC06609     DSC06610

DSC06616

Melonpan Bakery – Asakusa

One of the foods I learned about before arriving in Tokyo was melonpan, which Westerners call “Melon Bread”. It is a sweet bun that has a crisscross pattern on top. It’s a cross between a sweet roll and bread. It is great on its own, but I found a place that took it one step further. They sliced open the melonpan and put vanilla soft serve ice cream inside. This was AMAZING! It was a giant ice cream sandwich.

Street Food – Akihabara

Located in the area called Akihabara, where all the anime stores are located, I found a street vendor who was selling fresh pastry with cream. You could watch them make the pastry right there on the sidewalk. It was delicious hen it was served warm. Plus the design of the fish was cute.

Getting to explore a new city is exciting. Being able to visit Tokyo was a once in a lifetime experience and I was extremely fortunate to go.

Murphy’s Pub – Providence, RI

When you think of Rhode Island seafood is the first thing that comes to my mind. That is what I was planning on eating until I passed Murphy’s Pub. It was located pretty close to where I was staying. They have been around since 1929 so I knew I could not pass up an opportunity to try a little piece of history.

IMG_3300    IMG_3303

IMG_3304     IMG_3307

They are a classic Irish pub with a beautiful wooden bar. They were pretty crowded when I arrived, but I was still able to get a seat at the bar. My timing was perfect because within 15 minutes of arriving the place was packed and it was standing room only.

IMG_3302

I watched the bartender make Moscow Mules and I decided that I would get one, especially since they were served in copper mugs. The taste was perfect and it was nice to see they used a locally made ginger beer.

IMG_3310    IMG_3311

Their soup of the day was Italian sausage. It sounded comforting so I started with a cup of that. The sausage was crumbled in the soup so I was able to get the taste of sausage in each bite.

IMG_3305

I ordered a stuffed Quahog to have along with my soup. I have never had this dish before so I was excited to try something new. It was chopped up clams mixed with stuffing, then cooked in a giant clam shell. It was really hot when it came out so I had to let it cool off a little. Once it cooled it did not take me long to finish it. The clams were tender and tasted perfect with the fluffy stuffing. It was a nice balance of both ingredients.

IMG_3306     IMG_3308

I was still a little hungry so I ordered a sandwich. I went for their “City Hall Steak and Cheese”. It was hanger steak sautéed with onions and mushrooms and it was smothered with white American cheese. They served it on a nice Italian roll. It was essentially a Phily cheesesteak but considering I was in New England Patriots country I knew they were never going to call it that.

IMG_3309

The sandwich was huge, much larger than I was expecting. The steak was very tender and was even more amazing being covered in cheese. The onions were sweet and the mushrooms added extra texture to the dish. It also came with a side of their homemade potato salad. They use red potatoes which are my favorite.

Based on the constant crowd of customers, Murphy’s Pub is a popular place. I am so glad I stopped in and tried what they had to offer. I would highly recommend anyone visiting Providence to check them out. www.murphysprovidence.com

Hina Sushi – Ginza, Tokyo, Japan

For lunch in Japan there are so many different choices if you want sushi. I decided to try Hina Sushi that was inside a large shopping mall that I was visiting.

DSC06310    DSC06315

DSC06316

While their menu was huge, I wanted to keep it simple for lunch. I simply ordered a sushi lunch platter. It was chef’s choice of an assortment of sushi and rolls.

DSC06314

It was perfect because I got to try different fish I normally would not order. The rolls had salmon roe on them that added a unique flavor.

I recommend exploring sushi by allowing the chef to make the choices. This allows for a more adventurous experience.

Toraji – Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan

Toraji is a Korean BBQ in the lively area of Tokyo called Shinjuku. The restaurant, with its modern décor, offered different meal options for large groups to an intimate dinner for two.

What makes Korean BBQ so fun is that you actually get to cook the food yourself on hot coals in the center of the table. They have to pay attention or you can burn yourself.

IMG_0090

There was an assortment of meats that were chosen for the table. The shrimp and prawns were my favorite. Freshly grilled and dipped in their ginger sauce was the best. I also ventured out of my comfort zone and tried beef tongue and beef cheeks. These were extremely tough pieces of meat and were difficult for me to chew. I am glad that I can say I tried them, but I will stick with the filet going forward. That was my favorite meat of the night.

IMG_0091

The kimchi appetizer was amazing. It was so fresh and there was great heat to it. It also came with pickled cucumber that were not quite like pickles. They were sweet and sour tasting. The fresh pickled ginger was also perfect to help cleanse the palette in between bites of kimchi.

IMG_0089

The salad was fresh and a perfect way to start the meal. They put a sesame ginger dressing on top that was different from anything I have had before. It was very sweet.

IMG_0088

They also served a fried rice that was the perfect accompaniment to the meats.

IMG_0094

No meal would be complete in Japan without sake. However, I forgot to write the name down in English so the label is all I have to go on.

IMG_0092

If you are in Tokyo and want to try something a little different, try Korean BBQ at Toraji.

Ninja Restaurant – Akasaka, Tokyo, Japan

I experienced one of the most unique dinners while in Tokyo. It was recommended to me to try the Ninja restaurant because it is a really popular place. There are only around 22 tables so you need to make sure that you make a reservation in advance. The weekends are usually the hardest time to get a table, so if you can visit during the week that would be best.

I was really excited for this dinner. It’s a multi course meal that I needed to place an order for when I made the reservation. Luckily the subway station was near my hotel, so it made it very easy to get to there.

DSC06543

When I got to the front of the mysterious restaurant, I did not even see a door. I saw a red curtain on a wood plank wall. As I walked up a gentleman came out with a clipboard and asked for my name to see if I was on the list. After about 30 seconds of waiting outside I was allowed to pass through the mysterious curtain.

DSC06528

The room was very dark and a person latterly dressed as a ninja helped me navigate through this dark place. I went up stairs, down stairs, over a draw bridge (seriously this draw bridge came out of the wall!) and then finally up another set of stairs to what felt like a roof top table. I could look down and see other rooms that had tables.

DSC06483   DSC06482

The interesting thing about this is I never went outside. All of this movement was inside the building. I truly had no idea where I was in this restaurant. I was afraid to even visit the ladies room for fear of not being able to find my way back to the table.

Since I had to pre-order everything before I got there, all I had to order when my ninja waitress showed up was a cocktail. I ordered the “Cleopatra”, which was a blend of sparkling wine, slushy ice, and this interesting jelly with gold flecks in it. It came on a spoon and I had to mix it in the wine. It was sweet and very delicious. I ended up having two.

DSC06487  DSC06488

DSC06489

Now started the different courses from the Yamato Spirit Menu.

Course 1: Shuriken Star-Blades Grissini

These were cute black ninja star crackers that came on this stick tree. On the side, in the shape of a ninja star, was a Pâté like spread. It was rich and paired well with the crackers.

DSC06490   DSC06492

Course 2: Today’s Special

The special this day was a tomato gazpacho. It had some crispy garlic on top, along with a few croutons. It was refreshing.

DSC06493   DSC06495

Course 3: Turban shell bombs

This was a conch shell with the meat inside. The garlic butter that it came in was amazing.

DSC06496   DSC06498

Course 4: The Mystery Dish

I would describe this as a ninja croquette. It was a creamy rice and sweet corn covered in a black breadcrumb and fried. It was a little strange when it came out on the plate, but one I cut it open and tasted it, I was in heaven. I could have eaten several of these.

DSC06499   DSC06502

Course 5: Vegetable cocktail

The vegetable was fresh green beans sautéed in soy sauce and garlic. It was covered in a whipped Japanese stock that had a foamy texture.

DSC06503   DSC06505

Course 6: Special stone-boiled soup

This was a Japanese bouillabaisse. It was amazing to watch them prepare this soup at the table. All the raw ingredients are chopped up and went directly into this hot broth that was in a black kettle. Once everything is in she placed these giant hot stones directly into the soup. Within seconds the broth is boiling. Then she places thin strips of pork directly onto the rocks and the meat starts sizzling. Within a few minutes the soup is ready.

DSC06506   DSC06507

DSC06510

Course 7: Ninja style Cream Puff

This was a black pastry filled with a sweet cream. The pastry was sweet despite the dark color of the dough.

DSC06511   DSC06513

Course 8: Sherbet Candy

This was an ice cold piece of candy that came in a small metal dish. As soon as I touched it the candy started melting. It was a great palette cleanser before the meat came out.

DSC06514   DSC06515

Course 9: Meat of the day

There was a great flank steak this night, It was cooked perfectly at the medium temperature. It was tender and had nice steak seasoning on it. It came with a small casserole side that was scalloped potatoes.

DSC06516   DSC06517

Course 10: Sushi and Sushi Rolls

What I was not expecting was the sushi to come out after the main course. The assortment of tuna, salmon, shrimp, and spicy tuna roll were extremely fresh. Which I expected being in Japan.

DSC06521   DSC06522

Course 11: Dessert

Dessert was so cute, it was ice cream and a chocolate cookie that was in the shape of a frog sitting on a lily pad. It was so cute I hated to eat it.

DSC06525   DSC06524

Right before dessert came out, another ninja appeared at the table. He pulled out a special box and began preforming several different magic tricks. He was very talented and fun. He even left me with a souvenir.

DSC06523

If anyone has a chance to go to Tokyo I recommend you make reservations for the Ninja Restaurant. It’s a once in a life time experience. It’s over the top creative and that is exactly what I expected out of Japan. You can see their menu options on their website: www.ninjaakasaka.com
