Josephine’s – Boca Raton, FL

Having dinner with family can be extremely fun but also stressful. Making sure that everyone likes the menu is the stressful part. And when I am in charge of picking the restaurant the stress level increases. However, I met the challenge and found an Italian restaurant that everyone enjoyed. It is Josephine’s in Boca Raton, Florida.

The menu was spectacular. There were so many great options for appetizers and main courses. It was hard to narrow it down, so we tried a little bit of everything. We started with one of my favorite dishes, Clams Oreganata. These are littleneck clams that are topped with seasoned breadcrumbs and baked with white wine, butter, garlic, and lemon juice. They came out hot so the shells needed to cool off just slightly so I could pick them up. The clams were tender. The butter and garlic made the briny taste just disappear. The breadcrumbs had an amazing flavor from all the Italian seasoning. The saltiness complemented the clam. It was hard not to eat just one, but I needed to share it with the table.

The Eggplant Rollatini was delicious as well. The eggplant was thinly sliced. Each piece was stuffed with ricotta cheese, rolled up and topped with their tomato pasta sauce and mozzarella cheese. The eggplant was tender and paired wonderfully with the ricotta cheese that was creamy and sweet.

The meatballs were traditional Sicilian style. They were moist and tender. The herb taste of basil and oregano shined through.

The last appetizer that we ordered was Josephine’s Italian Eggroll. This was a unique dish for the restaurant that I just had to try. It was a filling of sweet sausage, sautéed broccoli rabe, and cheese. It was then rolled up in a thin pasta and fried up. It was crispy just like an eggroll. The sweetness of the sausage paired well with the tartness of the broccoli rabe. The moisture stayed locked inside the crispy shell. There was no need for a sauce because of all the flavors in the filling.

Now it was time for all the main courses to come to the table. I ordered the Chicken Piccata. This is my absolute favorite Italian dish. The chicken breasts were thinly sliced. They were sautéed in a white wine lemon sauce with capers. The chicken was extremely tender, I could cut it with a fork. The lemon flavor gave the sauce a great tang, along with the buttery rich taste.

Chicken Marsala was ordered as well. This chicken was also thinly sliced. It was cooked in a Marsala wine sauce along with cremini mushrooms and a little demi-glaze. The sauce was wonderfully savory. The mushrooms added a slight earthy taste to the dish. The chicken was cooked perfectly to retain its juiciness.

The Gnocchi was amazing. They are my second favorite Italian dish. These potato ricotta dumplings were freshly made and very fluffy. They tossed these in a homemade marinara sauce and fresh mozzarella on top. The sauce was rich but did not overpower the gnocchi.

The last dish that was ordered was the Fettuccine Carbonara. The fresh made fettuccine pasta was tossed in a parmesan cream sauce along with pancetta, shallots, and baby sweet peas. The sauce was rich and creamy with a salty taste. The peas added sweetness in each bite. The pasta was so tender you could tell it was homemade.

Even with all this food, we still made sure to order some desserts. We thought it would be great to share around the table. The cheesecake was classic New York style. It was soft but still firm. The sweet taste and creamy texture made the dessert very satisfying.

The other dessert was the cannoli. The filling was creamy and loaded with mini chocolate chips. The shell was crispy and had a nice taste of cinnamon. It was very well made.

The food was amazing at Josephine’s. Everyone enjoyed what was ordered, so I am glad I made my family happy. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. Check out their complete menu at www.josephinesofboca.com

Senor Burrito – Boca Raton, FL

There is a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant on Boca Raton called Senor Burrito. They have been serving up authentic Mexican food for over 20 years.

As soon as I was seated the waitress brought over a basket of tortilla chips and two fresh made salsas. The red salsa had a smoky, sweet taste to it. It was very finely blended so there we only a few chunks of tomatoes throughout.

The green salsa was spicy. It tasted like they used some green chilies and jalapeno to create that heat. This salsa was blended very smooth so there were no chunks.

I ordered the chicken tortilla soup. When the bowl came out I was shocked at how big it was. This was definitely a meal by itself. I am glad I did not order anything else.

There were huge pieces of chicken in the soup, along with an array of vegetables. The broth was extremely flavorful and not too salty. I did break up a few tortilla chips and threw them into the soup for crunch.

They also served a small side of rice. The flavor was good. Instead of eating it on its own, I ended up putting the rice into the soup. This just added a little more texture and heartiness.

I did not order much off the menu during this visit to Senor Burrito. However, I would want to go back to try something else. The fajitas looked pretty popular.

Barrel of Monks – Boca Raton, FL

I found a brewery in Boca Raton, Florida buried in the back of an industrial complex. You would have never known Barrel of Monks was back there if it wasn’t for Google Maps.

They are pretty big on the inside. They have a huge bar guests can sit at plus they also have tables, chairs, and couches. I sat on one of the couches. It was comfortable and a great way to relax at the end of the day.

They are pretty big on the inside. They have a huge bar guests can sit at plus they also have tables, chairs, and couches. I sat on one of the couches. It was comfortable and a great way to relax at the end of the day.

They are decorated beautifully. There are lids from barrels on the walls and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. They also have a collection of games that can be played while you are enjoying a pint.

Their beer selection was nice. Lots of patrons were doing flights which aloud for a sampling of multiple beers.

I just went for it. I ordered the Onward Together. This was a Bohemian pilsner with orange peels, mango, coconut, and pineapple puree. There was a slight sweetness to the beer, but it was not overwhelming. Of all the flavors, it was the coconut that seemed to stand out the most.

They offer a small menu with some munchies that you can enjoy while having a beer. I ordered the truffle fries. These were freshly sliced fries that still had the skin on them. They were covered with parmesan cheese and truffle oil. As soon as the fries hit the table I could smell the truffles. Truffles have such a unique, earthy aroma. The saltiness of the fries paired extremely well with my semi-sweet beer.

Barrel of Monks is a great brewery. It is beautiful inside and it is such a relaxing environment. They are off the beaten path but worth visiting. Just plug their address into Google.

Trattoria Nonna – Boca Raton, FL

I was so excited to be celebrating my grandmother’s 92 birthday. We took her out to a really nice dinner at one of her favorite Italian restaurants – Trattoria Nonna.

Trattoria Nonna is a local, family owned restaurant where they make so many things fresh. It is so warm and inviting when you walk in. It is decorated beautifully.

Our waiter was wonderful and really knew how to handle a large party. He made sure to bring us plenty of fresh bread right away. They offer two kinds – fresh made Italian white bread that is crispy on the outside and soft inside and homemade garlic bread that is crispy and full of flavor.

We ordered a few appetizers for everyone to enjoy. The calamari fritti was perfect for everyone. The calamari was tender and was fried to a perfect crisp. They also fried up some cherry peppers which was a nice addition. These were served with a spicy marinara sauce for dipping.

They had a really special dish I have never seen on a menu but see on cooking shows all the time – zucchini flower blossoms. They stuffed the delicate blossoms with Ricotta cheese and pesto. These were extremely rich. The cheese was so creamy and the pesto added all the flavor. The zucchini blossom actually did not have much taste.

For my dinner I ordered the Tortelloni Piemontese. These were jumbo size tortelloni that were completely hand made. They were stuffed with generous amounts of Asiago cheese. They were very rich and creamy. The pasta was sauteed with fresh sliced mushrooms, pancetta, and peas. The peas added a slight sweetness, while the pancetta added saltiness. The mushrooms added soft texture that paired perfectly with the cheese.

There was a singer going around the restaurant playing an accordion. I was able to get him to sing happy birthday to my grandmother, which she got a kick out of.

The restaurant also brought out a huge slice of tiramisu to enjoy. They make their desserts fresh everyday and I could tell as soon as I took a taste how fresh it was. The cake was soaked in espresso which was amazing. The cream that was placed in between the cake was so creamy. It helped cut down on the flavor of the espresso. The dusting of cinnamon on top added just a hint of spice.

The food at Trattoria Nonna was amazing. Everything was so fresh it made eating each bite so enjoyable. I cannot wait to go back. Check the out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Italian-Restaurant/Trattoria-Nonna-175664596312233/
